OLA Works for a Healthy East End

All community members deserve to enjoy excellent physical and mental health. By helping people navigate health care systems, taking them to medical appointments, and creating better access to health and mental health services, we are working toward a stronger, healthier East End.

Vaccine Education

When the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, OLA began providing a variety of pandemic-related services, including setting up a mobile testing site early in the pandemic, operating numerous vaccination sites throughout the East End in partnership with local health care facilities, educating community members about vaccine safety, and distributing COVID test kits.

We continue to provide community members with reliable, fact-based information about COVID vaccines and other immunizations for adults and children.

If you or your children have not yet been vaccinated against COVID or received other immunizations and would like to learn more about vaccine safety and providers, please contact us.

Health Care Access

Health equity starts with health care access. Lack of interpretation and translation services, health insurance, and transportation are just some of the obstacles community members experience when trying to access health care on the East End.

OLA offers support and follow-
up in these areas to ensure your health care needs are met.

Medical Transportation Program

OLA staff and volunteers provide medical transportation to and from cancer treatments, pediatric visits, OB-GYN visits, and other critical health and mental health appointments.

We also provide interpretation at doctors’ offices whenever possible as well as assist you with follow-up calls and appointments.

Wellbeing For Older Adults

Older adults can often feel isolated and alone, and those who do not drive, speak English, or work outside the home can feel especially isolated.

In partnership with Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, OLA regularly offers classes to East End Spanish-speaking seniors as part of a national falls prevention program and provides transportation for participants.

OLA staff members trained in a method used throughout the country lead A Matter of Balance courses and Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention, both proven to help prevent falls in older adults. Through offering these nationally known programs locally, OLA helps Latino seniors enjoy more strength, flexibility, mobility, and independence.

Emotional Support and Guidance

Free + Anonymous + Confidential

Faced with the need to improve mental health care access on the East End, OLA launched Youth Connect, the only local program of its kind, in 2022.

An emotional and mental health support program for middle and high school students, Youth Connect provides a team of trained crisis counselors who respond to calls and texts in Spanish and English from adolescents in need of support. The call/text helpline is available 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. 7 days/week. Youth Connect’s Program Director, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and Program Coordinator (MSW) oversee the crisis counseling team.

In partnership with schools, libraries, and houses of worship, Youth Connect delivers informative, interactive workshops in Spanish and English to students, parents, and congregations to foster dialogue about emotional wellbeing, substance use, and self-care.
